Course Overview

Our traffic marshal training is designed to meet the challenges of the many different sectors that now require traffic marshals and Banksman. A Traffic Marshal or Banksman is an operative trained to direct vehicle and plant movement on or around a construction or parking site. They also monitor and manage traffic entering and leaving site related to deliveries or pickups as well as create temporary or permanent routes and barriers. Some highly experienced and trained Traffic Marshals may also be involved in site logistics where they will work with other contractors to create a weekly schedules of expected vehicle and plant traffic movement in and out of site.

One of the main reasons for employing a Traffic Marshal is to improve safety levels on site. Nearly a quarter of all deaths involving vehicles at work occur during reversing. Reversing accidents not involving injuries can also result in do not result in damages to vehicles, equipment and premises. The majority of these accidents can be avoided by employing a Traffic Marshal to implement simple and effective precautions. Our course follows the HSE Health and Safety (Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 which means our Training is consistent and universal to meet your legal training obligations.

The Course will be assessed in 2 ways:

Part 1: Practical Assessment:
  • Individuals will demonstrate the correct knowledge for directing a vehicle
Part 2: Theoretical
  • Assessment and learning.
  • Understanding the roles of both the Driver and the Banksman.
  • Following a multi-choice question paper at the end of the course
  • Learners will be made aware of the Current Legislation (Safety signs & signals Regulations 1996)

Vehicle Banksman training is an effective way of improving the overall safety of a working environment where vehicles are required to reverse or perform maneuvres. Vehicle Banksman are a legal requirement on many sites and a strong recommendation for any site where reversing of vehicles is unavoidable.

Nearly a quarter of all workplace transport injuries occur when vehicles are reversing. Vehicle Banksman offer drivers a trustworthy second perspective while maneuvering to play a key part in reducing accidents.

Entrance Requirement
You must provide:
  • Two identity documents from group A. At least one document must show your current address and at least one document must show your date of birth.

Or

  • One identity document from group A and two documents from group B. At least one document must show your current address and at least one document must show your date of birth.
Group A
  • If you are a UK passport holder, your passport number entered on the application form. You do not need to submit the actual passport.
  • Signed valid passport of any other nationality.
  • Driving licence photocard if it was issued by the DVLA in Great Britain. We will not accept the photocard on its own if it was issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.
  • Driving licence photocard and its paper counterpart issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.
  • UK original birth certificate issued within 12 months of birth
  • UK biometric residence permit card
Group B (Address & Identity)
  • Valid UK firearms licence with photo.
  • Current UK driving licence - paper version (not the paper counterpart to a photocard).
  • P45 statement of income for tax purposes on leaving a job issued in the last 12 months.
  • P60 annual statement of income for tax purposes issued in the last 12 months.
  • Bank or building society statement issued to your current address, less than three months old. You can use more than one statement as long as each is issued by a different bank or building society.
  • Mortgage statement issued in the last 12 months.
  • Utility bill (gas, electric, telephone, water, satellite, cable) issued to your current address within the last three months. NOTE: You can only submit one utility bill in support of your SIA application.
  • Pension, endowment or ISA statement issued in last 12 months.
  • Letter from H.M. Revenue & Customs, Department of Work and Pensions, employment service, or local authority issued within the last three months. You can submit more than one letter as long as each is issued by a different Government department or a different local authority.
  • A credit card statement sent to your current address within the last three months. You can submit more than one statement as long as each is issued by a different issuer.
  • Council Tax statement issued in the last 12 months.
Group B (Identity Only)
  • Driving licence photocard (without a paper counterpart) issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.
  • Valid EU photo card.
  • Marriage certificate or Civil Partnership certificate, with translation if not in English.
  • UK birth certificate issued more than 12 months after date of birth, but not a photocopy.
  • Non-UK birth certificate, with translation if not in English.
  • UK adoption certificate

When do I get my Certificate and Card?
We issue your Certificate and Card upon course completion.

How much does it cost for the Training?
We charge £49 for the Training, Certificate and Card. We do discount for group offers, see pricing here for more details.

Money back guarantee if you fail. How does that work?
We have a very high pass rate nearly 99% of all our students pass the course. So if you fail we will not charge you any money but you have to retake the course to gain certificate and card

What’s the different between a Vehicle Banksman and a Traffic Marshal?
Vehicle Banksman and Traffic Marshal are two terms that describe the same thing. The term traffic marshal has largely replaced the more traditional term of Banksman reflecting the more diverse duties a traffic marshal may undertake in the public arena such as events, parking and security.

Can we still use Banksman to reverse vehicles?
Yes, but only if they are properly trained and authorised to do so. They must complete an appropriate traffic marshal course.

What do I need to bring with me?
For the Practical we advise you bring SAFETY SHOES. We will supply you with A HARD HAT and a High Visibility jacket for the training. The practical session takes place outside, delegates should bring suitable protective clothing. Candidates must also bring with them photographic ID, their photograph will be taken to produce their ID card, we must be able to verify who they are.

Can I direct Plant Machinery using this training?
Yes, given a suitable risk assessment is conducted in conjunction with a trained and certified plant operator factoring risks such as manoeuvring with a boom or while the Plant Machine is loaded.

If training is completed using a LGV, does this mean the certification is restricted to only Banking LGVs?
Whether candidates complete Vehicle Banksman training using a normal road car, a heavy goods vehicle or plant machinery, the role and responsibilities of the Vehicle Banksman remain the same.
